Allocative Efficiency Considerations in Online Auction Markets

چکیده

Allocative inefficiencies in online auction markets can result in the loss of revenues for sellers. It can also cause frustration for buyers who fail to win an item despite placing bids higher than other winners. The main contention of this work is that allocative inefficiencies present arbitrage opportunities, though not strictly in the traditional financial market sense, where risk-free profits are guaranteed. We develop a set of efficiency criteria to evaluate the auction activity of new and identically described items. Two principles, seller arbitrage and buyer arbitrage, are developed. These principles can be employed to evaluate the price behavior of temporally proximate auctions, and generate a useful benchmark to make allocative efficiency evaluations. Our empirical evidence suggests that arbitrage opportunities are present in a spectrum of online auctions. An empirically verifiable test of auction market allocative efficiencies is the major contribution of this research.

Trading Restrictions, Price Dynamics and allocative Efficiency in Double Auction Markets: Analysis Based on Agent-Based Modeling and Simulations

In this paper we conduct two experiments within an agent-based double auction market. These two experiments allow us to see the effect of learning and smartness on price dynamics and allocative efficiency. Our results are largely consistent with the stylized facts observed in experimental economics with human subjects. From the amelioration of price deviation and allocative efficiency, the effe...

On the Economic Effects of Competition between Double Auction Markets

Real market institutions, stock and commodity exchanges for example, do not occur in isolation. The same stocks and commodities may be listed on multiple exchanges, and traders who want to deal in those goods have a choice of markets in which to trade. While there has been extensive research into agentbased trading in individual markets, there is little work on this kind of multiple market scen...

Bi-directional double auction for financial market simulation

Typical Double Auction (DA) models assume that trading agents are one-way traders. With this limitation, they cannot directly reflect the fact individual traders in financial markets (the most popular application of double auction) choose their trading directions dynamically. To address this issue, we introduce the Bi-directional Double Auction (BDA) market which is populated by two-way traders...
